Udaipur, July 27: Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the world’s largest integrated zinc producers and a top silver producer, has successfully planted over 855,000 saplings from 2020 to the first quarter of the fiscal year 2027. This achievement underscores the company’s strong commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate protection.
Through scientific afforestation, habitat restoration, and biodiversity management programs, Hindustan Zinc is actively working to strengthen environmental balance in its operational areas in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. During the fiscal year 2025-26 alone, the company planted more than 113,500 saplings. This initiative is part of the company’s long-term goal to halt biodiversity loss and enhance the quality and resilience of natural resources, flora, and ecosystems by 2030.
On this occasion, Hindustan Zinc’s CEO Arun Mishra stated that responsible mining goes beyond better operations; it is also about conserving nature and creating a healthy environment for future generations. “Every conservation campaign reflects our commitment to balancing industrial development with environmental responsibility. Through scientific methods, innovation, and partnerships, we aim to create a positive environmental impact that allows both nature and industry to thrive together,” he added.
Hindustan Zinc has initiated several significant projects tailored to local environmental needs across its various operational areas. At the Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter in Rajasthan, the company has restored 22.25 hectares of Jarofix yard using mycorrhiza technology and aims to develop natural forests over an additional 250 hectares. Under the Green Jawar initiative, the Jawar Mines group has launched an extensive plantation campaign in the Rawa village, enhancing local community participation and strengthening regional biodiversity. The company has adopted Miyawaki techniques in Rajpura Dariba, Chanderiya, Debari, and Kayad, creating dense and rapidly growing native forests that aid in biodiversity enhancement and carbon absorption.
Additionally, a special nursery has been developed at the Rampura Agucha Mines for the conservation of native plants and future plantation programs. To further strengthen biodiversity conservation, Hindustan Zinc has developed and updated its Biodiversity Management Plan in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The company’s goal is to achieve no net loss of biodiversity, ensuring that development activities do not lead to an overall loss of biodiversity.
These efforts are part of Hindustan Zinc’s comprehensive strategy to enhance natural resources alongside its operational expansion. This includes restoring degraded land, expanding native flora, promoting ecosystem services, and adopting nature-based solutions.
As a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals, Hindustan Zinc is the first metal and mining company in India to join this initiative. The company is demonstrating that responsible mining and environmental protection can go hand in hand. In alignment with the ICMM’s Nature Position Statement, Hindustan Zinc is promoting a nature-positive approach in its operations, supply chain, and management systems to create sustainable value for both people and the environment.
