Udaipur, May 21: Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the world’s largest zinc producers, shared its efforts for environmental and animal care on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day. Under its community plan, over 410,000 livestock in Rajasthan have benefited.
The company is working on animal treatment in villages, providing water for them, improving forests and the environment, and employing scientific methods to protect wildlife. A major project has been initiated to enhance the 369-hectare Bhagdara Crocodile Conservation Reserve in Udaipur.
For the past decade, Hindustan Zinc has been organizing animal health camps in villages around its operational areas to promote animal health and livelihoods. Under the initiative, farmers receive free treatment, vaccinations, and accurate information, increasing their income and ensuring the health of their livestock. This program also aids farmers in learning modern and safe agricultural practices.
During the summer months, water tanks and containers are being placed in villages for animals. Additionally, reflective collars are being fitted on stray animals to prevent accidents on roads at night, making them visible to vehicles from a distance.
Hindustan Zinc’s CEO, Arun Mishra, stated that caring for the environment and wildlife is not just a responsibility but an essential part of their work. The company is committed to preserving nature and enhancing village life while adhering to the best global standards for national development and environmental protection.
Hindustan Zinc has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth ₹5 crore with the Rajasthan government to improve the Bhagdara Crocodile Reserve in Udaipur. This initiative includes planting new trees, constructing check dams and ponds to retain water, and creating walking paths and seating areas for visitors. Once fully developed, the reserve will provide a safe habitat for crocodiles and over 200 species of birds.
In collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Hindustan Zinc is committed to environmental conservation, aiming for a ‘no net loss’ policy. This means that any minor impact on nature during operations will be offset through tree planting and environmental protection efforts. This initiative demonstrates how a large company can operate industries while also safeguarding nature and voiceless animals.
