
Udaipur, June 6: Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the world’s largest integrated zinc producers, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to develop a 250-hectare ecological restoration project in Rajasthan. This initiative aims to transform industrial land into a natural ecosystem, enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience.
The project will be implemented at Hindustan Zinc’s Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex in Chittorgarh district, where the world’s largest green cover area is expected to be developed. This effort marks a significant step in the company’s commitment to converting industrial areas into thriving natural ecosystems.
This collaboration will play a crucial role in advancing Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability goals for 2030, focusing on measurable improvements to halt and reverse biodiversity loss while continuously working towards net positive impacts and nature-positive outcomes.
The project will adopt a scientific, multi-layered ecological restoration approach, incorporating native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses suitable for the local environment. It will also include measures for managing invasive species, supporting water bodies and aquatic ecosystems, and developing long-term maintenance and protection protocols. TERI will assist in identifying suitable local and adaptable plant species, involving subject matter experts in the planning, design, and implementation phases.
This new partnership further strengthens Hindustan Zinc’s long-standing collaboration with TERI. Restoration work has already been completed over 22.25 hectares in two phases at the Jarofix yard, transforming industrial land into an ecologically functional area with full green cover. Additionally, a biodiversity park covering six hectares is being developed atop a secure landfill within the complex. Approximately 56,400 local trees have been planted under this initiative, resulting in a lush green industrial area.

This initiative aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s comprehensive Environment, Social, and Governance roadmap, emphasizing land restoration, biodiversity conservation, responsible water management, decarbonization, and the responsible management of natural resources. The company is enhancing its sustainability performance through a 530-megawatt renewable energy agreement, expected to meet over 70% of its electricity needs, with initial supplies already underway. It has also improved its water recycling rate to 49% and expanded its green mobility fleet to 232 vehicles, including electric and LNG-powered vehicles.
Recently, Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, was recognized as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. With the proposed 250-hectare ecological restoration project, the company is ensuring its contribution to responsible industrial operations, regenerative landscapes, climate resilience, and long-term value creation for communities, biodiversity, and the planet.
