National Webinar on Earth Day Organized by India Scouts and Guides

Udaipur, April 24: The India Scouts and Guides organized a national webinar to commemorate Earth Day, emphasizing this year’s theme, “Our Planet – Our Power.” Dr. Anil Mehta, Principal of Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic and an environmental conservation activist, highlighted the importance of viewing Earth not merely as a planet but as “Mother Earth.” This perspective fosters a sense of service and reverence, contributing to a healthier and more prosperous planet.

Dr. Mehta stated that recognizing Earth as a mother naturally instills sensitivity, gratitude, and a protective attitude towards it. He expressed concern over the alarming state of 75% of the Earth’s surface, which has deteriorated due to haphazard development and greed. He warned that the world is heading towards a water crisis, with continuous degradation of natural resources such as lakes, rivers, mountains, seas, and forests. He pointed out that for every rupee spent on nature conservation, thirty times more is spent on activities that harm it.

Referencing Prime Minister’s “Mission Life,” which promotes a lifestyle for the environment, Dr. Mehta stressed the need to shift from “mindless consumption” to “mindful and responsible use.” He urged individuals to adopt balanced and environmentally friendly behaviors in personal, professional, and public life.

He advocated for a green lifestyle, recommending practices such as living plastic-free, reducing food waste, embracing a chemical-free lifestyle, consuming mindfully, and recycling. He emphasized the significant water usage in the production of food and clothing, urging people to adopt the principles of “Save Food – Save Water” and “Buy Less – Wear More Days.”

During the event, teenagers and youth from across the country pledged to incorporate green habits into their lives. Dr. Darshana Pawaskar, National Director of India Scouts and Guides, opened the program by sharing the objectives of Earth Day.
