Hindustan Zincs Chanderiya Smelter Achieves Zinc Mark Certification

Udaipur, April 30: Hindustan Zinc, the world’s largest producer of zinc and silver, has achieved a significant milestone by officially receiving the ‘Zinc Mark’ certification for its Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter. This plant is the first in India to be evaluated as meeting the Zinc Mark standards under the ‘Copper Mark Assurance Process’.

The ‘Zinc Mark’ is an internationally recognized standard that independently assesses how responsibly a plant operates. It focuses primarily on low carbon emissions, energy conservation, water management, waste disposal, employee safety, respect for human rights, and transparent and ethical business practices. As the global demand for sustainable development and responsible metal production rises, this certification further strengthens Hindustan Zinc’s global credibility. It reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to robust policies and responsible operational practices that align with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Commenting on this achievement, Hindustan Zinc’s CEO Arun Mishra stated, “Receiving the ‘Zinc Mark’ for the Chanderiya Smelter is not just an achievement; it signifies the direction of our future. We are redefining metal production with transparency and accountability. This step positions India as a reliable supplier of sustainably and responsibly produced metals on the global stage. In line with the principles of the International Council on Mining and Metals, we are incorporating responsible mining practices into all our operations, strengthening trust in global value chains, and establishing India as a dependable supplier of sustainably produced metals.”

The Copper Mark and its metal-specific ‘Zinc Mark’ framework follow a multi-stakeholder governance approach aimed at promoting the responsible production of critical materials. Certified sites not only excel in operational efficiency but also positively impact communities and respect human rights. This certification goes beyond traditional ESG ratings by recognizing operational performance and encouraging continuous improvement.

Recently, Hindustan Zinc was ranked as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. The company’s goals include reducing carbon emissions, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity. With this certification, the company has further strengthened India’s position in the global value chain.
