Udaipur, February 16, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran) — ADJ Kuldeep Sharma conducted a weekly inspection of the Central Jail in Udaipur under the guidance of Gyan Prakash Gupta, Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Udaipur, and under the aegis of the Member Secretary, Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority, Jaipur.

During the inspection of the male prison, ADJ Sharma reviewed the medical facilities, food, tea and breakfast arrangements being provided to inmates. He also sought information regarding free legal aid, appeals, parole and other related services. The District Legal Services Authority informed inmates about legal assistance available under the Legal Aid Defence Counsel Scheme. It was noted that the male prison currently houses inmates beyond its sanctioned capacity.

The inspection revealed that many inmates, primarily from remote and rural areas, are illiterate and often hesitate to sign documents related to appeals, parole and free legal aid. In view of this, Jail Superintendent Rajpal Singh has initiated literacy classes inside the prison. Over the past two months, around 50 inmates have learned to read and write. Male inmates are being taught for three hours daily using classroom-style instruction.

ADJ Sharma assessed the progress of inmates by asking them to read words written on the board, including simple and compound words. He informed that inmates are also engaged in factory work inside the jail, producing coolers, durries and iron items.

Officials stated that inmates who were completely illiterate at the time of admission have now learned to write and even sign their names. Gradually, they will be given access to books available in the jail library for reading. Some inmates have also filled forms for open schooling to enable them to pass Class 10 examinations.
